New Teaching / Learning Website
We've created a new website for teaching our online clinical aromatherapy courses and for showcasing our live courses. The Aromatherapy School is now the Highlands School of Natural Healing at www.HighlandsNaturalHealing.com 
This new teaching/learning platform allows us to offer you the latest technology in distance learning. Once enrolled, you'll be able to move through the courses at your own pace, working online or down loading your lessons. You'll take your quizzes online and have open access to a student / teacher forum where you can post questions or comments to the teacher or other students in your class. Periodically, there will be audio conferences with your instructor, Dr. Joie Power.
Initially, we are offering only Dr. Joie Power's online course in Clinical Aromatherapy on our online learning platform. In the future, we will offer courses and videos by other instructors in the healing arts field as well as additional courses by Dr. Power.

CLINICAL AROMATHERAPY FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
ONLINE CERTIFICATION COURSE
LEVELS I, II AND III
This series of courses is designed for licensed health care practitioners and has been taken by nurses, massage therapists, physicians, physical therapists, pharmacists and others. The course offers three sequential levels of training leading to a diploma/certification in Clinical Aromatherapy. Non-licensed persons may also take the course and upon completion will earn a certificate in Practical Aromatherapy. It is assumed that students enrolling in the course have a foundation in basic anatomy and physiology.
This in-depth instruction by Dr. Joie Power will provide the student with a solid foundation in the practice of aromatherapy and the actions of essential oils with an emphasis on safe and effective use in clinical settings. The course combines solid scientific data, practical clinical techniques and a holistic approach that honors Body, Mind and Spirit. It covers both evidence-based and energetic approaches to the clinical practice of aromatherapy and provides basic instruction in the principles of Chinese Medicine to anchor the energetic approach. By the end of Level III, you will have learned how to effectively use 36 or more essential oils. Throughout the course, Dr. Power shares her 30 years of experience in the use
of essential oils in clinical settings and uses her unique expertise in the field of neuropsychology to provide insight into the neurological basis of the olfactory effects of essential oils on mood and behavior and on Endocrine and Immune System Function. She moves beyond the basic practices of utilizing essential oils for simple physical complaints and behavioral issues and shows students how essential oils may be used as key tools in helping people recover and maintain optimal health and vitality.
The online course is quite a bit more in-depth than the live course has been in the past. The online course is much more involved, requiring 50 hours per level vs. 15 hours per level in past live courses. Graduates of Dr. Power's Live Level I, II & III courses will be required to repeat each level before moving on to the next one and obtaining a Certificate. We offer a special price of $100 per repeated level to all of Dr. Power's former students. Example: If Joe took Level I live and would like to take Level II online then Joe must take the online version of Level I before beginning Level II online. Joe's cost: $100 for Level I (repeat) then $800 for Level II online.

So that we can help insure that our course will meet your needs, we ask that each prospective student complete an online application. Once approved, students will be permitted to enroll. We limit new enrollments to 10 per month so, on occasion, students may have to wait a few weeks before starting the course. Unlike other correspondence courses that accept unlimited enrollment, we want to ensure that each student has adequate access to individual feedback and assistance from Dr. Power.
The current price for Level I is $700 until all three Levels are available (only Level I is available now). The price will be $800 per level after all three Levels are available online (later this fall or winter). If you register for all three levels at once, the total price will be $2100 but this option is not available until all three levels are online.

Aromatherapy Diploma / Certification
Licensed Healthcare Professionals who successfully complete all three levels of Dr. Power's Aromatherapy Workshops will be awarded a Diploma in Clinical Aromatherapy.
Non-licensed students will receive a certificate of completion for each level completed and a Diploma and Certification in Practical Aromatherapy if all three levels are successfully completed.
Aromatherapy and Alternative Healing Workshops in Asheville NC
Dr. Power will not be scheduling her live courses until she has completed writing all three Levels of her online course. We expect that live courses will be available in late spring / early summer 2015.
Our previous workshops were a great success - almost all seats for Levels I, II & III were filled. We had a great time - Joie loved teaching the classes and based on reviews from her students the classes were well received. Our students had a wide range of backgrounds, including M.D.s, nurses, massage therapists, hospice workers, physical therapists and others that just wanted to learn about aromatherapy to help themselves and their family.
The live courses are being restructured to compliment the online series and will also be available as "stand alone" events open to all participants.
Since the three-level Clinical Aromatherapy for Healthcare Professionals Certification Course has been enhanced and lengthened to become an in-depth correspondence course, the live classes will be restructured and will not provide the same certification that the online three-level course provides.
All of the live workshops will be at Wyldhaven, Dr. Power's 60 acre farm near Asheville - Quite a beautiful spot in the backwoods of the Western North Carolina mountains about 30 min SE of Asheville / 20-25 min. S. of Black Mountain / 15 min. N. of Bat Cave / 40-45 min. NE of Hendersonville.
Excerpt from Level I, Lesson 3 Online Course in Clinical Aromatherapy
THE NATURE OF ESSENTIAL OILS, HOW THEY ARE EXTRACTED, and THEIR MANY USES
Essential oils are at the core of aromatherapy and are the unique phytomedicines that aromatherapists rely on to achieve therapeutic results in working with clients in clinical settings. It is important to understand that an essential oil is something that is naturally derived from plants and that the health-promoting effects that can be achieved through working with essential oils cannot be achieved through use of synthetic fragrance materials. Only pure essential oils are used in aromatherapy; fragrance products that are synthetic or essential oils that have been adulterated in some way are strictly avoided, not only because they do not have healing properties but also because synthetic products and additives have well-documented negative effects on health.
In order to be a good aromatherapist you must have a deep understanding of the "medicine" you are working with and that you will be using to help people restore balance and overcome challenges to their health and well-being. To arrive at such a deep understanding of what essential oils are and what they can do we must considered them from a number of different perspectives including their:
- · Physical nature
- · Medicinal nature
- · Chemical nature
- · Energetic nature
- · Biological nature
We will then consider the ways in which essential oils can be removed from plants and we will discuss the many different ways in which essential oils can be used. This lesson concludes with a discussion of the countries of origin of the essential oils covered in Level I.
