Essential Oils for the Skin - Natural Help for Acne

Using

THE SKIN: Essential Oils are of benefit to the skin because their solubility in lipids draws them readily into the skin and allows them to diffuse and penetrate in the skin. Their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, emollient, analgesic, and healing properties are of direct benefit, while calming, immunostimulating, detoxifying properties support the correction and healing of underlying causative processes.

Since skin disorders are often the first indication of systemic imbalance, it is important to treat at the systemic level (food allergy, chronic stress) since failure to do so may cause the ailment to go deeper and manifest as a more serious complaint.

For this reason, essential oils should be used as adjuncts to a broader treatment approach or they will be no better than mainstream suppressive therapy.

ACNE: The sebaceous glands produce excessive sebum which blocks follicles. Bacteria multiply in the blocked sebum, causing inflammation.
Possible Causes: hormonal imbalance (androgen and testosterone); food allergies (esp. wheat or milk); possible disturbance in carbohydrate metabolism and/or improper diet.
ESSENTIAL OILS: German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) - antiseptic, anti- inflammatory, cicatrisant, digestive, hepatic, stimulates leukocytes (WBC). German Chamomile makes a better choice than Roman Chammomile because it has more anti-inflammatory properties but where stress is a component, Roman chamomile offers a greater relaxing effect.
Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica): antiseptic, antiseborrehic, diuretic, circulatory stimulant, tonic (lymph).
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens): antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, cicatrisant, diuretic, hormonal, styptic, regulates sebum, tonic (lymph). Use with care on the skin of hypersensitive people.
Juniper (Juniperus communis): antiseptic, depurative, diaphoretic, diuretic, sudorific, stimulant (circulatory), tonic. Avoid where there is kidney disease; many references advise avoiding in pregnancy.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, calming, cicatrisant, tonic.
METHODS OF USE: warm compresses; baths (to aid general detox); full body massage to aid detox and balance nervous system; spray on skin tonic (diluted in distilled water (95% water).
RELATED HERBAL REMEDIES: Burdock, Dandelion, Nettles and Chamomile.
SUPPLEMENTS: Evening Primrose Oil especially if the condition worsens with PMS. Garlic, Vitamin C., brewers yeast, chelated zinc or zinc gluconate.
OTHER: plenty of fresh air, exercise, deep breathing and relaxation. Flower remedies as indicated. Dietary changes as needed.
