Aromatherapy: A Branch of Herbal Medicine

Aromatherapy Workshops / Aromatherapy Classes

Expand Your Knowledge into the Field of Herbal Medicine

It's a shame that most aromatherapists never study the broader field of herbal medicine because one of the things they miss by not doing so is immersion in the world of plants. When you study herbal medicine you learn where the medicinal plants live, how to propagate them and when to harvest them in order to get the most potent medicine; you go to the woods and fields often and you watch for signs like the phases of the moon or the ripening of ginseng berries. In the study of herbal medicine you join an ancient community of healers, and you learn from members of that community that herbal medicine is more than a "skill set", it is a lifestyle. The lifestyle of a traditional herbalist is one that honors and carries out the old traditions…like welcoming the plants back to life with spring rituals or making offerings when you collect plants. These are not quaint superstitions; they are conscious practices that if followed with intention will lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the healing power of plants and of the ways in which plant medicines help to stimulate the body's own innate capacity for restoring and maintaining health.

An herbalist clearly understands the difference between a plant medicine and a pill. A pill is a "thing", it has no life in it, you cannot develop a relationship with it, and there is no wisdom to be gained from it. A plant is alive, we have an evolutionary kinship with it and the deeply intentional study of herbal medicine will ultimately awaken in you an awareness of that kinship so that plants become your allies in healing. Unfortunately, most aromatherapists do not develop this sense of kinship. They buy their oils in a store or online; they do not spend long hours in the woods and fields searching for the plants that produce their "medicines" and so they generally have little knowledge of the habitats in which they flourish and when they should be harvested. For these reasons, aromatherapists are more likely than herbalists to simply view essential oils and other phytomedicines as mere substitutes for drugs.

In order to utilize plant medicines, including essential oils, to their fullest potential you must first understand that these medicines are not just substitutes for drugs - they have properties that drugs do not have such as tonic properties, balancing properties, adaptogenic properties and more. Phytomedicines have an ability to strengthen the body and to restore balance and harmonious function at all levels of body, mind and spirit; these are things that drugs just can't do. Drugs can often make you feel better; they can overcome many types of infections; they can sometimes keep you alive but they do not restore health, they do not heal.

6 Days in Asheville: Three 2-Day Aromatherapy Workshops

The Aromatherapy School Classroom at Wyldhaven Farm

Our 2012 workshops were a great success - almost all seats for Levels I, II & III were filled. We had a great time - Joie loved teaching the classes and based on reviews from her students the classes were well received. Our students in 2012 had a wide range of backgrounds, including M.D.s, nurses, massage therapists, hospice workers, physical therapists and others that just wanted to learn about aromatherapy to help themselves and their family.

This year each workshop will be a two day weekend event.

The Level I Aromatherapy Workshop will be presented over two days, then the same for the Level II Workshop a month later and then the Level III workshop a month after that.

Students may elect to take just one workshop or two or all three. Level I is available to all Healing Arts Practitioners (or with special permission). Level II is open only to graduates of Level I and, Level III is only open to graduates of Level II.

Since our online/correspondence course for Level I will be available by midsummer, some students may opt to take some aromatherapy classes live and some by correspondence.

Level I: Foundations of Aromatherapy for Healing Arts Practitioners - August 3 & 4 (Sat./Sun.)
Level II: Creating Essential Oil Blends for use in Clinical Settings - September 7 & 8 (Sat./Sun.)
Level III: Clinical Practice in Healthcare Settings - October 5 & 6.

Aromatherapy: One Drop at a Time

Cost for the live 2013 two-day workshops is $350.00 Early / $400.00 Late (less than 60 days prior to the class).
$150.00 reserves your seat for each level.
Register for all three Levels and save even more.
$450.00 reserves your seat for all three classes.
Note: The Level I class is nearly filled so if you want to join us this year, be sure to Reserve your seat NOW, since there will be only one series of live workshops this year.

All of the above workshops will be at Wyldhaven, Dr. Power's Farm near Asheville - Quite a beautiful spot in the North Carolina mountains about 30 min SE of Asheville / 20-25 min. S. of Black Mountain / 15 min. N. of Bat Cave / 40-45 min. NE of Hendersonville

Online / Correspondence Aromatherapy Courses

Online Aromatherapy Courses

The Correspondence Course in Aromatherapy will be Presented in Three Modules:
  • Level I - Available by midsummer 2013
  • Level II - Available by fall 2013
  • Level III - Available by winter 2013

Aromatherapy for Healing Arts Practitioners

This series of aromatherapy courses (mainly correspondence with some online activities) offers sequential levels of aromatherapy training and is designed for massage therapists, nurses and other healing arts practitioners who wish to integrate aromatherapy into their professional practice. It is assumed that students enrolling in these aromatherapy distance learning courses have a foundation in basic anatomy and physiology. After registering for the Online / Correspondence Aromatherapy Course, students will receive an extensive workbook divided into multiple lessons. Aromatherapy students will be expected to complete each lesson in sequence, do all required reading and take a test for each lesson. These aromatherapy courses are not easy and will require a sincere commitment from each student; the lessons are "in-depth" but written to be easily understandable by anyone willing to make the effort.

The Aromatherapy School will be offering three levels of online aromatherapy classes (I, II & III)

  • Aromatherapy classes are sequential, i.e., you must take Level I before Level II, etc.
  • Students can choose to take the online/correspondence aromatherapy courses or live courses.
  • Students may mix and match between live and online/correspondence courses.
  • Both live and online aromatherapy classes follow the same format though the online course is more extensive
  • Students are presented with an Aromatherapy Certificate of Completion for attending both days of the workshop.
  • Students may choose to take exam at end of workshop. Students who pass receive an Aromatherapy Certificate of Achievement.
  • Classes are geared toward Healing Arts Practitioners (Nurses, Massage Therapists, MDs, etc.)
  • All students are expected to have an understanding of basic physiology and anatomy.
  • Levels I & II are open to non-practitioners (must have working knowledge of physiology and anatomy).
  • Students completing all Levels will receive a Certificate in Clinical Aromatherapy.
  • Each live aromatherapy class is offered at least once per year (several times most years).
  • All live classes are taught by Dr. Joie Power, director of The Aromatherapy School.
  • Each level of the live classes is presented as a two-day weekend workshop.
  • Live classes are offered at Dr. Power's farm, Wyldhaven, near Asheville North Carolina.

Cost for the Correspondence/Online course is not yet set but will probably be in the range of $500 - $600 for each level with some discount for taking all three levels.
FYI - The price is higher than the live courses since much more material is covered and a greater number of hours will be required of both the student and Dr. Power.
